Frequently asked questions

Can I rent a motorcycle in Colombia with a foreign license?
Yes. We accept valid motorcycle licenses from any country together with your passport. Most of our customers are foreign travelers riding with licenses from the US, Europe and Latin America.
Do you offer long term motorcycle rental (weekly, biweekly or monthly)?
Yes. Besides daily rentals (1 to 6 days) we offer weekly (7+ days), biweekly (15+ days) and monthly (30+ days) long term rental plans. The longer you ride, the lower the daily rate: from $33,000 COP per day on a monthly plan, about $990,000 COP for 30 days on a Kymco Twist 125.
How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Medellín?
Daily rentals (1 to 6 days) range from $70,000 COP for a Kymco Twist scooter to $230,000 COP for a Honda XRE300. Weekly and monthly plans are cheaper, starting at $33,000 COP per day. Prices include 19% VAT.
What is included in the rental?
Two helmets, two reflective vests, phone holder, theft insurance, total and partial loss insurance, third-party liability, accident insurance, SOAT and technical inspection, 24/7 roadside assistance, tow truck and nationwide maintenance.
How much is the security deposit?
Between $1'100,000 and $1'800,000 COP depending on the bike (about US$260–450). It can be paid in cash or by credit/debit card.
Do you deliver to the airport?
Yes. Delivery at José María Córdova airport (MDE) costs $160,000 COP and must be scheduled in advance.
What is "Pico y Placa"?
A weekday traffic restriction in Medellín (5:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.) based on the first digit of the license plate. We tell you which day applies to your bike. See the current schedule (in Spanish).
Can I rent a scooter or motorcycle in Medellín with a car license?
No. In Colombia you need a motorcycle license to ride a motorbike or scooter (category A1 up to 125 cc or A2 for bigger bikes). A car license (B1) does not cover motorcycles, and the same applies to foreign licenses: they must include the motorcycle category. With a car license you can rent our Bajaj Maxima cargo trike. If you don't have a motorcycle license, you can still enjoy the ride as a passenger with a professional rider on our Guatapé no-license tour or the Night Tour.
Can I rent a motorcycle in Medellín and return it in Bogotá?
Yes. We have a pick-up and drop-off point in Bogotá (La Española, Engativá), so you can pick up the bike in Medellín and return it there: choose Bogotá as the drop-off location in the quote tool and we will confirm availability. Returning it in another Colombian city costs $490,000 COP on the daily plan or $390,000 COP on long-term plans.
Can I travel all over Colombia on a rented motorcycle?
Yes, you can ride anywhere in the country. Pick your plan by mileage: the daily plan includes 200 km/day cumulative (unlimited if you rent 5 or 6 days) and the Unlimited plan, from 7 days, has no mileage cap. For mountains and dirt roads we recommend a dual-sport bike like the Honda XRE300. If you prefer a guide, see our guided motorcycle tours.
How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Colombia?
With us from $33,000 COP per day on monthly plans. Daily rentals (1 to 6 days) range from $70,000 COP for a scooter to $230,000 COP for a Honda XRE300. Prices include VAT, insurance, 2 helmets and 24/7 roadside assistance. A refundable security deposit of $1,100,000 to $1,800,000 COP applies depending on the bike.
What do I need to rent a motorcycle in Colombia?
A valid motorcycle license (from Colombia or any country), your passport or ID, being 23 or older, at least 1 year of riding experience and the security deposit in cash or by card. More details in our rental guide.
Is it safe to travel around Colombia on a rented motorcycle?
Yes, thousands of travelers ride across Colombia every year. We recommend riding in daylight, sticking to main roads, checking road conditions before you leave, parking in private parking lots or inside a building or house, and not leaving belongings in sight. Our bikes include theft insurance, third-party liability, SOAT and 24/7 roadside assistance, and we share route tips before you go.
What does Rentamotos Colombia’s insurance cover?
We work with Seguros SURA. Our insurance covers total loss, partial damage, third-party damage, theft and towing in case of an accident or breakdown. Any claim with the insurer requires paying a deductible, which varies depending on the motorcycle model.
How easy is it for a foreigner to buy a motorcycle in Colombia?
It is possible, but there is paperwork: registering in the RUNT system, transferring ownership at the traffic office, keeping SOAT insurance and the technical inspection up to date, and checking for fines in SIMIT. Requirements vary by office (some ask for a foreigner ID card, cédula de extranjería), it can take days or weeks, and you must sell the bike before you leave. For stays of weeks or months, a monthly rental from $33,000 COP per day, with insurance and maintenance included, is usually easier and cheaper.
