Colombia's most accessible glacier
An expedition for travelers who want to walk on a glacier without the technical level of extreme mountaineering. We combine the ride through the Central Andes with a night in the páramo, a pre-dawn climb under the stars and sunrise on the snow, with Nevado del Tolima and Nevado del Ruiz on the horizon.
Day-by-day itinerary
DAY1Medellín → ManizalesRiding to the coffee region
We ride from Medellín along mountain roads and coffee landscapes to Manizales, the gateway to Los Nevados National Park. Dinner and rest at the hotel.
DAY2Manizales → Los Nevados ParkUp to the páramo and acclimatization
We ride up into Los Nevados National Park and reach the páramo, where we take an easy acclimatization walk among frailejones. Sunset in the mountains, early dinner and rest at the lodge before the climb.
DAY3Climb to the Santa Isabel glacierNight ascent and sunrise on the glacier
We leave before dawn with headlamps, under the moon and stars, over moraines and frosted rock to the edge of the Nevado Santa Isabel glacier at about 4,950 m. At sunrise, Nevado del Tolima and Nevado del Ruiz appear above the sea of clouds. Then we descend to the lodge for lunch and rest.
DAY4Los Nevados Park → MedellínPáramo and the ride back to Medellín
After breakfast we walk the páramo with views of Nevado del Ruiz and ride back to Medellín.
